The Government’s recent Budget outlines a focused commitment to building critical infrastructure that will support sustainable growth across the UK. At the Independent Networks Association (INA), we support these measures and are encouraged by plans to enhance Local Authorities’ planning capabilities, expand EV charging networks, and accelerate progress on clean energy projects.
Nicola Pitts, INA’s Executive Director, has highlighted the importance of these measures in advancing the UK’s infrastructure:
“Independent networks play a crucial role in supporting new infrastructure, from connecting homes and businesses to facilitating growth in new low-carbon technologies. The Government’s commitment to planning reform and building capacity within Local Authorities will be key in achieving net zero ambitions that reflect local needs and challenges. By empowering councils to set out regional priorities, we’ll see faster delivery of essential services and utilities—driving growth, jobs, and sustainability across the country.”
Accelerating EV Charging Networks and Grid Expansion
The Budget includes an important commitment to support the growth of electric vehicles, an essential step toward decarbonising the UK’s transport sector. While we welcome this commitment, further steps are needed to streamline land rights and consents that delay the deployment of critical EV charging infrastructure, particularly along motorway routes. INA looks forward to further discussions on removing these barriers.
Housing and the Future Homes Standard
In housing, the INA applauds increased investment in the Affordable Homes Programme and in major projects in Liverpool and Cambridge. However, we call for careful implementation of the Future Homes Standard, especially for developments already underway. Rushing these measures risks stalling up to 530,000 new homes, equivalent to over three years of housing delivery.
Clean Energy and Grid Connections
The INA is particularly encouraged by the Government’s support for accelerated grid connections, in collaboration with the National Energy System Operator (NESO). Grid expansion is critical for connecting new developments and supporting both local and large-scale projects across the UK.
We remain committed to working alongside the Government and regulators to remove barriers to growth, helping deliver the critical infrastructure and low-carbon technology that will bring economic benefits, jobs, and environmental progress to every part of the UK.
