INA Annual Conference 2024: Driving the Future of UK Energy Networks

Earlier in the week we hosted the INA Annual Conference at Coin Street, bringing together key stakeholders from local and national government, the third sector, industry, and regulatory bodies. This year’s conference focused on the pressing challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the UK’s energy networks. Attendees engaged in thought-provoking discussions around sustainability, affordability, and innovation in the sector.

Keynote from Energy Minister Michael Shanks MP

The event was kicked off with a message from Energy Minister Michael Shanks MP, who shared the Government’s ambitious vision for the future of the UK’s energy landscape. In his address, Minister Shanks emphasised the importance of driving clean energy innovation while ensuring that energy remains accessible and affordable for all. His speech underscored the need for collaboration across sectors to meet the UK’s net zero goals by 2050.

Engaging Panels and Discussions

Throughout the day, we heard from a diverse range of industry leaders. Philip Glanville of UK100, Adam Berman from Energy UK, and Lewis Gardiner from Osprey Charging Network discussed the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging networks, the role of local authorities in energy transition, and the need for sustainable, adaptable future energy systems. Their discussions highlighted the necessity of collaboration across all levels of government and industry to deliver these solutions.

Kate Ashworth from the West Midlands Combined Authority offered insights into the unique challenges faced by regions like the West Midlands, including how a rapidly changing energy landscape presents both opportunities and difficulties that require regional cooperation. Emily Bulman from Ofwat provided a comprehensive outlook on the future of water regulation, particularly in light of the expanding NAV market.

What’s Next: Insights and Full Report

In the coming weeks, we will release a detailed report summarising the key outcomes of the conference. This report will capture the collaborative solutions shared by our delegates, focusing on the actions needed to advance the UK’s energy networks in a way that is sustainable, resilient, and responsive to the evolving needs of consumers and industry alike.

Stay tuned for this comprehensive report, which will provide further insights into how the INA and its members plan to address the energy challenges ahead.

Special Thanks

We would like to express our sincere thanks to our INA Team, particularly Nicola Pitts for facilitating engaging discussions, and to our Chair, Vicki Spiers, for setting the tone for the day. A special mention to our exceptional event organisers, Helen Priestley and Gavin Sangiovanni, MCIPR, as well as Dean Carby and the team at Carby & Co, for making the event a great success.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making the 2024 INA Annual Conference an event to remember.
