Most properties receive their natural gas supply through pipes that are either owned by Gas Distribution Networks (GDNs) operating in specific geographical areas, or an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT) operating throughout mainland UK.

This can be established by either looking on your gas bill or, alternatively, through the gas supplier online service, or by contacting the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524 (please note that calls to this number cost 7p per minute plus your phone company’s access charge).
An electricity distributor is a licenced company that distributes electricity through its cables. The electricity distributor has a contract with the Electricity Supplier who supplies the electricity to the property. The Electricity Supplier is the company that charges their customer for the electricity used at the property.

You will need to obtain details of the Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) from the IDNO. Equipped with this and a connection date, you can contact your chosen energy supplier to arrange for a meter to be installed. The new supply needs to be in place before the meter arrives.
In order to get a gas meter installed, the Independent Gas Transporter will need to be contacted, the process will differ for each iGT.
It is a legal requirement that a gas supply contract exists between you and a gas supplier before a meter can be installed.
